This follows the TV game show birthday surprise I made for Polly, which I wrote a bit about here, and is essentially the second part of her birthday surprise.
Simply put, while I do enjoy a cake, for Polly nothing is more synonymous with a birthday than a cake. And a while back we watched a TV show on Netflix called “Is it cake?” – which was silly – but which we also enjoyed a lot. The participants there, have to among others, guess from several items which one is the real cake. And those cakes look super realistic to everyday objects and make it really hard to guess correctly.
And so, ever since seeing that show together (and since I had a similar goal on my bucket list!) I knew I had to get her a similar cake at some point and to replicate the “game show” part “Is it cake?”.
However, it’s easier said than done to get a cake like that as not that many bakeries have the skill or capacity to make this kind of stuff. But luckily I found one called Dear Harley here in Hong Kong, and their cakes are amazing and so realistic.
So, I’ve worked with them to devise the cake. And while I had lots of different design ideas initially, I decided on the humble banana. It’s a very familiar object, it often has great details in terms of how it ripens, yet no two fruit looks exactly alike – which should make the challenge harder for Polly.
Below in the video you can see how she did.
