Are you dreaming about visiting the Maldives but think that it’s so expensive that you gotta save up until you win the lottery or are heading for honeymoon? Well, it can certainly be expensive to visit, but with the right approach it’s far from as expensive as you might think, so let’s explore how you can visit Maldives on a budget.
1. Stay on the local islands
Probably the most important tip to cut down the costs when you’re going to the Maldives is by visiting the local islands (such as Dangheti, Rasdhoo and Felidhoo), instead of the artificially constructed resort islands — which also are much more expensive. Another benefit by doing so is that you’ll get to know the local population.
These local islands used to be closed for tourists but have gradually opened up in recent years. And, because of this, there’s also the general feeling (and truth) that exploring these is quite off-the-beaten path.
2. Avoid the peak season
It’s simply nice with around 30 degrees Celsius in the Maldives all year around, so try to avoid the peak season between December-April, as this is also naturally when the prices reaches its peak.
Not only will the prices be lower, but there also will be fewer tourists. They generally say that in the period from May to November you can expect some more rain, but in return the waves are generally better and the animal life in the coral reefs is more colourful.
3. Include the Maldives on a longer trip
Chances are that your home country is quite far from the Maldives, and so what about including Maldives as part of a bigger round-trip? That wouldn’t necessarily have to cost much extra at all. For example, fly to Maldives from Sri Lanka, India or Dubai.
4. Commute with the local ferries
Most of the tourists that comes to the Maldives fly into Male and then either take a smaller domestic flight or a speed boat to the islands. Those are generally quite expensive.
Instead, you can save lots of money by jumping on one of the local ferries. They are not the fastest alternative, and you probably have to plan more thoroughly in advance, but it’s generally a nice experience. Be sure to check the ferry schedule, here! Some ferries do not depart daily, so plan in advance!
5. Skip the expensive luxury resorts — or at least mix up your stay
If you’re travelling on a budget then you’re dependent on finding relatively cheap places to stay for the night, and obviously you won’t find that on the luxury hotels. Instead, you may opt for many of the small, local-owned guest houses that have opened up in recent years. There you can get a stay for the fraction of the price, and you will be taken well care of by the host and their family. Not only will this make your stay in Maldives much more affordable, but it will also give a you much more authentic experience of the Maldives.
6. Try the fabulous local seafood
Another advantage by living in local guest houses is that you that you’ll get the chance to try some real authentic Maldivian food, and… it’s delicious! Most guest houses have meals included in the price, which typically consists of fresh seafood that you’ll enjoy with the host’s family. If you’re feeling adventurous then you may head down to the beach when the local fishermen come back with today’s catch. Do some bargaining and you may end up with a really cheap and delicious dinner.
7. Go snorkeling by yourself
A lot of people think that you need a boat to get to the really nice snorkeling areas. However in the Maldives there’s so much awesome to see under water, which you easily can swim out to from the beach. Most resorts and guest houses offers free snorkeling equipment, but it wouldn’t be expensive to buy it yourself as well.
A general rule of thumb though, if possible, don’t go completely by yourself; be sure to at least bring a friend with you for safety precautions.
