Most of the goals on my bucket list have been there since its inception. However, as life changes so do priorities. And similarly, as technology advances, so does it make possible things that were perhaps not possible (or at least less feasible) before.
This I’d argue is the case with “tufting” – or at the very least I was unaware of the experience and opportunity many years ago. But from the moment Polly and I learned about it, we knew we had to go and we watched various YouTube videos at first to learn more about it. And I am sure that modern-day technology has made the process both faster and more fun. And it has been amazing to see what all the talented people in the world are able to create through tufting, which definitely inspired us a great deal.
But OK, I’m getting ahead of myself, because what is “tufting”? Well, I’ll try to explain it as brief and eloquently as I can – but my technical jargon in this space is not that great, and so if you’re a visual learner you can take a look at this video from “Rug Babe“. But OK, here goes: tufting is basically a type of textile manufacturing in which a thread is inserted on a primary base. It is an ancient technique for making warm garments. After the knitting is done, short U-shaped loops of extra yarn are introduced through the fabric from the outside so that their ends point inwards. The way that tufting has been greatly modernized in recent years is through so-called “tufting guns” which helps automate the tufting process, and is typically focused towards rug making. The yarn is fed through a hollow needle that penetrates the stretched cloth backing. Did that make sense at all? Here’s also the Wikipedia article which goes much deeper in detail.
Anyways, sweet Polly arranged it all for us to have a full-day tufting workshop at The Fès Studio which is located at 4/F, Hennessy Apartment, 48 Percival Street, Causeway Bay.
The cool thing about the experience is that you can do any design you want. You simply send them your design ahead of your session and they will print it on the stretched cloth canvas for you to follow at the studio.
As always though, we tend to spice up our experiences in various ways. This time around we did so in two ways.
- Firstly, we were not to know what the other person would design. It would be a complete surprise.
- Secondly, we were to induce a competition out of it by having our instructor rate which tufting carpet was the best! And, the loser would receive a punishment from our “Wheel of Pun-ishments“. (In the video you’ll see who got the punishment and what they had to do…)
We highly recommend this experience, which was a lot of fun!
PS! This experience was not sponsored.
